What is a doomsday option?
Doomsday options (0DTE, Zero days to expiration), refers to options contracts that expire on the same day, but also refers generally to options contracts that are about to expire. For most U.S. stock options, the general expiration date is every Friday. For SPY, QQQ, the exchanges provide daily expiration option contracts from Monday to Friday.
Characteristics of doomsday options
(1) Liquid and actively traded with small spreads.
(2) Time premium will decay rapidly: for out-of-the-money options, the value of the option will go to zero if it remains out-of-the-money at the close of trading; for in-the-money options, their extrinsic value will disappear rapidly during the day, leaving only the intrinsic value.
(3) Holding a doomsday option carries the risk of being struck, so you need to make sure that you have understood the relevant options and managed your position well before trading such options.
